Luke, Vangie, Ian, and I saw Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind this afternoon. Though I cannot condone Jim Carrey’s average movie (they can be passed off as generally mindless and often humorless comedies), I have to rate Eternal Sunshine up there with The Truman Show in terms of Carrey’s acting. As for the story line, I’d put the two on par as well: both mind-bending, thoughtful, films attempting to say something about the viewers’ culture. The quick synopsis of this one is that a doctor has invented a procedure to erase “painful memories.” Disappointed with their failing relationship, Clementine erases all her memories of Joel and their relationship. In a frenzy of sorrow, Joel follows her lead and begs the “good” doctor to bleach his mind of Clementine—but as the process occurs, Joel recalls all the good memories they had together, and he begins fighting the procedure. The message you clearly retain: memories make who you are; erasure thereof, even of painful ones, destroys part of your personality. Continue Reading >>
