“When you see a cloud rising in the west, you immediately say, ‘A shower is coming,’ and so it turns out. And when you see a south wind blowing, you say, ‘It will be a hot day,’ and it turns out that way. You hypocrites! You know how to analyze the appearance of the earth and the sky, but why do you not analyze this present time?”
Luke 12:54 – 56
(Picture courtesy of the Seattle Times.) I think these verses ring quite true in today’s society. There endless scientific studies being conducted so we can more fully understand our world, be it humans’ cellular structure or the rotation of stars thousands of light years away. You can read about it every day in the newspaper and online: “New study has shown…” Or look at Nature, Science, the New England Journal of Medicine, or any number of other reputable sources: they are wonderful, empirical sources of data and play an important role in our understanding of the world. But what brave soul will stand up an analyze the current culture, its fortes and foibles, successes and moral failings? And who would be brave enough to step out from behind the protective covering of empiricism and the scientific method to speak words that people do not want to hear?
