Day’s Verse:

An excellent wife who can find? For he worth is far above jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain.

Proverbs 31:10 – 31

This morning I did a careful study of what the Bible describes a good wife as. Proverbs 31:10 – 31 is a classic verse, but I found several other ones that provided amplification to the Proverbs passage. These included 1 Corinthians 7:2-11, Ephesians 5:22-33, and 1 Peter 3:1-6. Many of these verses have cause more liberal Christian women to squawk about the unfairness of women having to submit to their husbands, about the silliness of banning braiding hair or wearing jewelry; but that’s not the point of these verses at all. What I found as I read was that over 2,000 years ago the Bible describes the kind of wife that anybody would be proud to be today. For instance, she’s the person her husband trusts most because she never — get that? Never — hurts him. She’s her husband’s right hand and he trusts her with their finances even to buying and selling property (that’s pretty serious stuff, considering the price of land these days!). She gives to charity and watches her figure so she keeps looking good her whole life (Prov. 31:20, 22, 25). But at the same time it’s not the outside that matters so much as the inside, because inside a Godly wife is gentle and quiet-spirited (1 Peter 3:4). She’s not some weak and sniveling ditz who can’t do anything but simper; she’s capable and learns a profession, then goes out and earns money for her family (Prov. 31:19, 24). She’s strong and full of dignity, not afraid of the future but looking forward to tomorrow with expectations of good things, which is reasonable because God blesses the husband and wife who live in His will. Frankly, that’s not half the list I compiled (click here for the whole list); but it’s a start, and it’s amazing what God calls wives to be… and all these verses didn’t even mention not nagging! I’d be honored to one day have somebody say of me, “Now there’s a Godly wife.” I can only aspire
