Subject: Problem with Quiz Answers

I think there may be a mistake on the quiz answer sheet. I noticed that the quiz answers said that “Stage of G that lives in liver” is a merozoite. However, the picture in the book on page 569 indicates that merozoites live in red blood cells, while sporozoites live in the liver.

Thanks for considering this issue.

I spot a problem with the quiz answers and decide to take it up with our amusing but disorganized professor.

Hi, Katie. Thanks for bringing this up. Here is the way it works: Sporozites invade the liver. They turn into merozoites and leave the liver for the red blood cells, where they continue to produce more merozoites. I was trying to convey that the sporozoites are the invading stage and the merozoites are the multiplying stage. In looking at the picture and acknowledging that there is no text to back up what I am saying, it is vague. I should have asked a question about the blood cells and then it would have been a sure thing. As is, I am going to give credit for either answer, and you get a rubber fish for alerting me to it.

Professor Gibson acknowledges a problem with the quiz and the study materials. In class he announces that everybody will be acceded 2 extra points as a result of my inquiry. On Thursday Lucas and I proactively follow Prof. Gibson to his office and claim our quizzes, which he kept forgetting to give back to the class. Lucas notices another problem in the grading as we skim the tests; he brings it up and Professor Gibson awards each of us 2 additional points, asks for an email to remind him of the change and tells us to get out of his office before he changes his mind.

Prof. Gibson,

You asked Katie Ferguson and I (Lucas Clemons) to send you an email as a reminder that we each get two extra points on Quiz #2. Thank you very much,

Lucas

Lucas follows through on the email in a most respectful manner, although we continue to dislike the style of Professor Gibson’s class.

done.

We get our final two points, which brings us into the obscenely-high-A range in the class. Also yesterday he only handed out two fish: one to me and one to Lucas. I just fear that each additional quiz will require such diligence to make sure we are graded fairly. Update: Lucas, Lesley, and I all earned fishies today in the pre-quiz review session!
