Know that the Lord Himself is God;
It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves;
We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.
I went into a McDonald’s a couple days ago. This broke a promise I had sworn to myself when I arrived in London that I would not enter any American franchise while in this fabulous city. But I had walked and walked that day, in the heat and crowds, and McDonald’s offered exactly the balm I needed. Eagerly I passed beneath the golden arches and through the shining glass doors, eyes searching. Where? Where? People stuffed themselves with burgers and fries in all directions but I couldn’t find what I needed. Down the stairs I went, searching, looking everywhere. Wrappers on the floor. Squashed fries. Employees cleaning. People eating and slurping. Then, at last, like a light dawning I saw it, marked with the familiar sign. Like a ship reoriented by a lighthouse I moved purposefully, hurrying. Finally in that McDonald’s I found what my heart longed for.
A free bathroom, cleaned every 15 minutes. Then and there I thanked God from the bottom of my heart for the American mentality of making restrooms publicly avaliable in eating places.
