Day’s Verse:
And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven,
blessed the food and broke the loaves and He kept giving them to the disciples to set before [the crowd of five thousand]; and He divided up the two fish among them all.

In my Social Implications class, we addressed an interesting question:
What technology or technologies do you think should never have invented?
At first I had trouble thinking of an answer to this; many technologies exist that are totally neutral, and so need not vanish from the earth. But eventually I, and later a group of us, came up with:
The Hummer H2/gigantic luxury SUVs
Genetic testing on unborn babies
Cell phones
Nuclear weapons (this was much debated; I may not agree on that)
I still feel this list is incomplete, despite its brevity. I kept thinking of technologies like cars and airplanes, things that have disrupted the world so deeply it may never recover. But much good has come from those, too. Surely there must be other technologies that have done so much harm, or are so totally useless, that they should not exist. What are they?
I would love you even if you didn’t have H2 & SUVs on your list, but since you did, well, what more need I say?
Love you!
A good list. Very, very tentatively, I can’t help wondering whether the refinement of petroleum could be on the list. On the one hand, oil is an invaluable resource for transportation and power. On the other hand, it has caused pollution, wars, and the destruction of natural environments, has sped up globalization and all-around encouraged consumerism. More harm than good?
On the other hand, the baby smasher (www.babysmasher.com) is a very useful piece of technology.
OK, that’s just bad. But funny. Thanks for sharing… I think.
