Real Girls Like Mud

RingingHiking with Dad and Colleen yesterday at St. Edward’s State Park, we began discussing mud. The mud we encountered there, though abundant and deep, slid off our GoreTexed boots; Colleen analyzed it as primarily leaf detritus mixed with water and a little bit of dirt, whereas serious mud involves pure dirt or clay, such as the stuff we encountered on our Bridal Veil Falls hike. We did encounter some lovely clayey mud, but it mostly rinsed off our boots in the more watery mud, which has formed thanks to the fact it has rained every single day since Ian and I got here. This St. Edward’s hike was all part of my trying to say Farewell, Washington. This afternoon, as part of that, we are going to the Spaghetti Factory with my and Ian’s family for a Farewell dinner. Ian and I have sorted and boxed most of our remaining possessions, then re-sorted what we bring now and what we will return for after graduation. Tomorrow we ship six or seven Xerox boxes full to Worcester, leaving only the largest, bulkiest, or heaviest items at home (a large cushy chair, a desk, a shelving unit, a coffee table). All this packing and boxing makes it nigh impossible to ignore the fact that Ian and I will become official Massholes this summer. I only hope we fail to drive like them. Continue Reading >>
