Day’s Verse:
Encourage the young women to love their husbands, […] to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored.
Titus 2:4

Charles River does not seek to make its employee experience as delightful as possible. It does not have a cafeteria, a workout room, or readily available showers; the internal temperature varies from unbreathably hot and humid to shiveringly freezing. But one thing I will say for this company: They have an ice cream truck that comes every Thursday to dispense – get this – free ice cream to all employees. We just walk up and ask for what we want, write our names and department numbers in a list, and enjoy. So far I’ve enjoyed a Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia bar, a Ben and Jerry’s Half Baked, and a Haagen-Dazs rasberry sorbet & frozen yogurt bar.

While standing in line, I listened to my coworkers talk about how they would get the Haagen-Dazs bar because it was low-fat. This struck me as strange: In getting ice cream, they worry about the healthiness of it? To my mind, ice cream should not be scrimped on. If you’re going to eat ice cream, enjoy the real high-fat version. I’m not saying you should eat it all the time, or consume enormous (American-sized) portions of any food, let alone something like ice cream. But am I alone in thinking that it seems a bit odd to seek out healthy ice cream?

  1. Free ice cream? No fair! Why can’t I have a company that has free ice cream? Pleease! Can I have one?

  2. greetings from washington!

i have many many thoughts on ice cream, but that is for another time, another place. i will say that tonight i had tillamook brand ice cream. it tasted like washington. mmmmmmm.

  3. High fat is not bad. High fat ALL THE TIME and in HUGE PORTIONS is bad. And good ice cream is not unhealthy anyway. It’s just (like a lot of things) unhealthy to have a lot of it.

  4. That’s true. It seems like for all the diets and eating fads we’ve had — low fat, low calorie, low carbs, celery and rice cakes, whatever — a healthy diet ends up boiling down to “Everything in moderation,” and also throw in some exercise into the mix.
