Pretend Accuracy

People love decimal places in measurement, even when said decimals have no actual meaning. It makes numbers appear to have more meaning than they actually do. Two places I’ve noticed meaningless decimals:

  • A scale: Your weight will vary by more than 0.2 lbs based whether you drank a couple glasses of water first or not; it’s like fake weight gain/loss.
  • A thermometer: Its outside temperature varies from that reported by our car and by online sources by ±five degrees. What does 0.1 degree mean when you can’t be sure it’s accurate within one degree, or even five degrees?

I’m sure there are other places you find this pretend accuracy (maybe cars that tell you the exact number of miles an hour you’re driving?), but I can’t think of them. Continue Reading >>
