Day’?s Verse:
I know that everything God does will remain forever; there is nothing to add to it and there is nothing to take from it, for God has so worked that men should fear him.
Ecclesiastes 3:14

Brakes/ShiftersI love waking up in the morning to feel the fresh, cool promise of a warm day to come. There’?s something about those mornings, when the air feels just a little too cool for comfort but promises some real heat in the hours to come, that injects a little extra jazz into my veins for the day. Such mornings, the world feels renewed, not simply recycled from the previous day but totally fresh — like clothes hung out to dry in the sun that crinkle and smelly sunny when you fold them. Yesterday morning felt that way, as did this morning. Based on their cheerful noises, the birds agree with me.

Yesterday, though, the heat came early. It gave me an opportunity to really clean off my mountain bike, which had accumulated an impressive amount of grime from the weeks of riding through wet. The apartment maintenance people hooked up a hose with a spray nozzle for me, and I jetted water at that bike with a vengeance. Spraying the water at the wheels, watching them spin faster and faster, reminded me of playing with water at some museum Mom took us to as kids (the Seattle Science Center has something like this, but my memory is of an indoor space with a huge, multi-tiered trough that water ran down through various wheels and toys). They had directable spray nozzles you could point at wheels, and the wheels would start spinning faster and faster, until you sprayed the water away or the other direction. I had some fun with that spraying yesterday, although at one point I stood directly behind my rear wheel to sprayed it, and as it spun the water sprayed right back at me and soaked me before I realized how silly I had been.

Michelle arrived some time while I was in the end stages of washing my bike, and afterwards she and I went for a walk at Hopkinton State Park. That evening, Ian and I went to her house for dinner with her and Brian; I enjoyed the company and it made me sad that I had missed this companionship all winter. Also Michelle is a much better cook than I will ever be, so I love eating what she makes — it’s invariably delicious.

Which leads me to yesterday’s eating times.
8:05 — Smoothie
9:40 — PB&J; English Muffin
2:10 — Leftover cheeseburger and fries, string cheese, three pieces of a Hershey chocolate bar
5:25 — String cheese
7:00 – 8:00 — BBQ chicken, salad, pasta salad, baked beans, two rolls, a small helping of ice cream

Weekends I tend to eat much less regularly than weekdays, I think. Also I have noticed that after eating, and it really doesn’t matter what or how much I ate, I feel like something sweet. Hence the chocolate ball following immediately on the heels of a string cheese. Also I think last night’s dinner may have been the first time I ate meat all week; getting enough protein remains a continual struggle for me, especially getting it without also consuming a lot of fat (as in cheese or nuts) with it.

  1. yesterday i was thinking about how awesome it would be to be taking a walk in hopkinton state park. instead i sat in the library.

  2. Four good sources of protein that also contain little and/or beneficial fats: salmon, turkey, quinoa, almonds.

  3. It was the Seattle Science Center… and you will be amazed at how tiny the water wheel and play area are when you see it again. Being two or three or four years old makes all these things sooo much more impressive! Glad you had a carefree time playing in the water. We all need those moments!
