Nominally Clean

When it comes to washing hands, my Mom raised me right — of course I always do after I go to the bathroom. Who wouldn’t?

Turns out, lots of women wouldn’t. Well, let me rephrase that. One gal I know of never seems to wash her hands after using the bathroom; I can’t get that at all. A whole nother category of hand-washers do such a cursory job it’s hard to imagine they really benefited from the wash. These people turn on the water, flick their fingers quickly in the water totally sans soap, and then dry off with voluminous piles of paper towel. These people, I’ve come to think, really do the token hand-washing as a nod to propriety, more to keep other women from thinking ill of them than to actually remove any germs. They simply want to avoid the stigma associated with not washing hands, but they would probably skip it if they could, thus ending up with nominally clean hands. Continue Reading >>
