Playing Hooky

Day’s Verse:
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to Jew first and also to Greek. For in it is the righteousness of God revealed, from faith to faith; as it is written, “But the righteous man shall live by faith.”
Romans 1:16-17

You remember the snow forecast I posted in my blog yesterday? When I checked the weather this morning they had revised the total snowfall up to six to 10 inches, mostly expected to fall during my workday. Continue Reading >>

The Dreary Feel of Real Life

~~~
Day’s Verse:
But as for me, I would seek God,
And I would place my cause before God;
Who does great and unsearchable things,
Wonders without number.
He gives rain on the earth
And sends water to the fields,
So that He sets on high those who are lowly,
And those who mourn are lifted to safety.
Job 5:8-11
Balsa Wood Airplane PilotDon’t get me wrong: I feel content with my life, and if I’d like some aspects to change, well, perhaps this year will see those changes occur. But coming back to our apartment, to doing our own grocery shopping, dishes-washing, dinner-planning, chore-doing, and general life maintenance always feels jarring to me after a sojourn away. I also feel lonely, because I have done a terrible job making friends, so life in Massachusetts is life pretty much alone with Ian. It feels especially dreary to come back and read the forecast for tomorrow: Continue Reading >>
Round and About Again
Day’s Verse:
And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
Romans 5:3-5
There’s something sadly unjust about time zones. Now that we’ve spent the last week here, I have mostly adjusted — bed at 10:00 pm, wake up at 6:30 or 7:00 am — and it’s time to go back to Massachusetts. Every trip we leave just as my sleep schedule shifts. Alas. Going East always hurts more time zone-wise than coming West, so I suppose I should consider having to wake up at 3:30 am PST just practice for getting back into our normal Eastern Time Zone routine. That doesn’t make waking up early hurt any less, though. Continue Reading >>
Doings and Goings-On
Day’s Verse:
Is not your fear of God your confidence,
And the integrity of your ways your hope?
26 DEC 2008:
Snow continues to fall.
I find this remarkable, frankly. My parents’ neighborhood continues as a morass of knee- to ankle-deep slushy snow, often atop a slick frozen snowy layer. So far, I have helped push 10 cars and one FedEx truck (the truck didn’t move. It was like pushing a boulder). No snow plows come down into the neighborhood, and the roads show tracks of dozens of adventurous or foolish drivers attempting to escape. We have relied on my father driving his four-wheel-drive Subaru for our sole transportation. It’s much like regressing to junior high again, begging rides from parents to get anywhere. Snow in the Northwest
~~~
Day’s Verse:
God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways;
he does great things beyond our understanding.

He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth,’
and to the rain shower, ‘Be a mighty downpour.’

So that all men he has made may know his work,
he stops every man from his labor.

Job 37:5-7

Today is my second day in a row being awake at 3:00 am PST. Fortunately last night involved falling asleep right around 8:00 pm and sleeping straight through until 3:00, landing me with a fair amount of sleep. And if I’m used to sleeping eight or nine hours a night, well, I just get to wait for my body clock to catch up with the time zones. Also naps aren’t out of the question on vacation days. I love a good nap. Continue Reading >>

Finally In Seattle

~~~
Day’s Verse:
Just as you do not know the path of the wind and how bones are formed in the womb of the pregnant woman, so you do not know the activity of God who makes all things.
Ecclesiastes 11:5
Our travel on Saturday will probably go into the family legends as one of our most nightmarish trips ever. Friday evening, after finding a hotel room in Providence, RI where the snowstorm had stranded us, we walked 1/2 mile through the snow to the closest restaurant. It was OK, and most of all, it was food. Then we went back and slept. Continue Reading >>
Not in Seattle Yet
Day’s Verse:
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
John 14:27
Ian and I have never gotten stranded while traveling, so today we get to blaze new territory (for us). The friends who dropped us off took us extra-super-early because they wanted to avoid any snow driving, and there was a big storm predicted to hit around 1:00 pm. We got to the airport at 11:00 am, checked in (enjoying the very short first class line), and waited. And waited… and waited… and waited. Until finally, about 3:30 or 4:00 pm, after hearing announcements canceling pretty much every other US Airways flight, we heard the fateful announcement about our flight. First they told us the plane would land in 5 minutes; then 20 minutes later, that the flight was canceled and we would have to rebook. Continue Reading >>
