After receiving the dress shipped to Mrs. Sarguson in Marleorough, I decided that I needed to get a move on to make sure I could get it altered in time for Colleen’s wedding. I had tried it on and it definitely would have fit a much bustier woman than myself. So I took the dress box, which was about pizza-box sized, and placed it securely in one of my bags. The box slipped in and barely showed over the top; I cinched down one of the ties and voila: Transportation. Tossing my bike lock into the other bag, I happily set off for the dress shop, dressed in a T-shirt, jeans, normal shoes, and a warm jacket: Continue Reading >>

The Xtracycle Dream Is a Reality

~~~
Day’s Verse:
If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort.
Charlotte the Xtracycle
The Hauling End
We have completed (mostly) the conversion of Charlotte into an Xtracycle. I rode home this evening in high, blustery mostly-tailwinds with the entire rear of the bike full and weighted. It was a load (pun intended) of fun, actually; this is not a bike to go anywhere in a hurry on, but I love it already and look forward to spending more time on this fabulous machine. Here is a post I put on a bike forum I frequent, if you want more details on the bike. Continue Reading >>
Speaking of food — which apparently lots of us like to do — I’ve mentioned the Nourse Farm before, back in August when I rhapsodized about their fresh berries.
At the time I saw that they offer community supported agriculture (CSA) shares at the beginning of the growing season each year. The idea is to pay a big chunk of cash to a local farm up front, and then over the course of the season you get food that the farm grows. The benefit is that, as their web site explains, “The share holder benefits from a constant supply of locally grown produce offered weekly, ripe and fresh.” Additionally, “Buying food locally keeps small farms economically viable, keeps land in agricultural production, and preserves open space.” I particularly like the Nourse Farm CSA program because, according to their web site, their “produce is naturally grown. For a few crops that is not feasible. For these particular crops we use an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program. That means we utilize many strategies to avoid or solve a pest problem. In this program we scout the fields for insects and disease, we seek protection with beneficial insects and biological controls, we use disease resistant varieties, and bug-excluding row covers.” This means environmentally-friendly food from a nearby source — what a great idea! Weight Illogicalities
~~~
Day’s Verse:
O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise
because of your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.
When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
the son of man that you care for him?

All you clever observant people have probably noticed I added a blurb up above there. That means that June 27 and 28 I will, once again, ride the Cape Cod Getaway and, once again, I implore you for donations. You can read Ian’s coverage of the 2008 ride here: Day 1 and Day 2; my coverage is here. Continue Reading >>

The Ski Bike

Day’s Verse:
But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.
1 Cor. 14:40
~~~
Do you ever daydream something, only to discover somebody has already done it? This happened to me when I saw the Ktrak:
Yes, that is a bike with a ski on the front and a huge tread thing on the back. I imagined doing something like that (not seriously), but dismissed it as too complicated. I guess the people at Ktrak would have to disagree, although I honestly cannot imagine a huge market for that kind of thing. I expect that something simpler might do the job just as well.
