Is Maritoriousness Possible?

~~~
Day’s Verse:
Let your speech always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person.
Grass Leaves and Metal LeavesLast night, Ian sent me a word of the day: Maritorious, meaning “excessively fond of one’s husband.” Uxorious is the husband-for-wife version of the term.
The more I ponder about this word, the more I doubt it is truly possible. I think you could demonstrate your fondness to excess — being overly fawning, for example, becomes onerous to the fawn-ee quite rapidly, not to mention uncomfortable for people around the overly demonstrative couple. But to saying that a woman could harbor excessive fondness for her spouse is like saying a person can have too much joy in her life. Continue Reading >>
Along the Way
Day’s Verse:
My soul finds rest in God alone;
my salvation comes from him.
He alone is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.
Today, once again, I rode Charlotte. We took the long way to and from work, meandering quite a bit in pursuit of interesting photos. As usual most pictures turned out mediocre, but one or two stand out, and those brought a realization into focus (pun intended) for me: I have an eye for small things. By isolating a little bit of a large, ordinary scene, I bring out its extraordinary qualities. Landscapes and I remain on less friendly terms, perhaps because they require a better artistic sense, or perhaps because they require greater technical skill to capture accurately. Skies and objects in the foreground continue to confound my abilities. Continue Reading >>
The Meaning of Meaninglessness
~~~
Day’s Verse:
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
Colossians 3:23-24

Tree and SkyCall me dense, but I just cannot understand the first sentence of the following paragraph.

At Charles River, we have an incredible fabric of values. Because our work helps accelerate drug development, we are helping to bring new therapeutics to patients who need them. Our work truly makes a difference that matters, and that is very powerful. Continue Reading >>

Day’s Verse:
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

We had wild and crazy wind with clouds scudding all over the place all day. The plus side of this was that I also got scudded along my way home with a good tailwind, which I resisted at one point along the way to take the following picture. Continue Reading >>

First Photos With Canon Rebel XS

~~~
Day’s Verse:
My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
Colossians 2:2-3
I finally caved and allowed Ian to spend some of his hard-earned bonus money on buying me a digital SLR. After much research and discussion with the guy at LB Wheaton, I felt good about plunking down $620 for the Canon EOS Rebel XS, which received good reviews and was particularly known for high image quality. I always felt like the pictures I took with my old Canon S1 IS (and by old I mean old, for digital cameras — we bought it in October 2004) started to break down the closer you looked at them; they had numerous issues associated with small lenses and sensors. Only an SLR camera could address my complaints. Also, the upgrade to my camera was the Canon SX1 IS, which cost — gosh — $600. The Rebel XS cost the same amount. What did I have to lose? Day’s Verse:
For by [Christ] all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
