I know I haven’t updated in a while. After Memorial Day, my workweek turned hectic. I spent a portion of Monday through Wednesday taking pictures of scientific staff for some HR stunt. This sounds easy but isn’t — many of the people turned out difficult to track down; then some of them refused to relax and smile naturally no matter what I did (this part actually took a huge amount of energy: Maintaining cheerful and amusing chatter with people, every one of whom told me “I hate having my picture taken” before we started, in order to get the occasional actual smile or laugh, which I then had to try to capture as well as possible); and of course some weren’t happy with the pictures I took (to be honest, I’m not 100% pleased with all of them, either) so I had to take more. Then one had the bright idea to take pictures in the lab (fluorescent light galore! Gah!) and then other scientists I’d already photographed said “But I want some in the lab, too!” And then actually choosing which picture to send to HR turned into an ordeal all of its own, especially with the more attractive women (“It’s not easy being beautiful,” one of my coworkers commented. Apparently it isn’t — you have high expectations all the time) …All of which gave me a deep and abiding respect for professional portrait photographers. By the end of Tuesday, when I took pictures of 7 of the 11 people, I felt wrung-out and exhausted. I also got almost no work done last week what with all the photography interruptions. And then, of course, there’s the nerve-wracking aspect of leaving my camera with Security so they could review the pictures I took. This is actually a pretty dumb policy because I brought my cable in to download the pictures onto my work camera. What would keep me from taking non-allowed pictures, downloading them to my work computer, and then emailing them to myself? In any case, the thought of security guards messing with my camera drove me to distraction until I got it back safely. I’ve sworn off taking pictures of anybody at work ever again. Seriously. For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.

Portrait Before Waterfall

This picture was experimental in a couple ways: One, I used a slower shutter speed to get the flowing water in the background; two, I used a flash to illuminate our faces, since we had the sun behind us. I’m very pleased with how it turned out. Also it took a lot of patience to wait at the Grist Mill for everybody else to clear out so we could be alone in our picture! Continue Reading >>

Today’s route:

The Route

The elevation profile:

Elevation Profile

In words: 3,628 feet of climbing on an 80°F day, with >50% humidity and intermittent thunderstorms. I did have a good 12-mph or so tailwind and averaged 14.9 miles an hour, maxing out at 38 mph down one hill or another. All that going up meant that I did get to go down often, too; home is lower than church, so all church-to-home rides end with a net loss of elevation. Unfortunately church is in a remarkably hilly area, so those rides also always entail loads of climbing anyway. So now I am very tired, having ridden the requisite 140 weekend miles, plus a bit over 100 commuting miles. Good thing I have tomorrow off. My legs might go on strike otherwise. Continue Reading >>

Day’s Verse:
Every time you criticize someone, you condemn yourself. It takes one to know one. Judgmental criticism of others is a well-known way of escaping detection in your own crimes and misdemeanors. But God isn’t so easily diverted. He sees right through all such smoke screens and holds you to what you’ve done.

For my birthday, we went yesterday and saw the new Star Trek movie for free using some tickets I got from work five months ago. I greatly enjoyed myself and aside from that all I have to say is I also enjoyed the Bad Astronomy review of the movie. Continue Reading >>

Day’s Verse:
It’s news I’m most proud to proclaim, this extraordinary Message of God’s powerful plan to rescue everyone who trusts him, starting with Jews and then right on to everyone else! God’s way of putting people right shows up in the acts of faith, confirming what Scripture has said all along: “The person in right standing before God by trusting him really lives.”

Day’s Verse:
Tell those rich in this world’s wealth to quit being so full of themselves and so obsessed with money, which is here today and gone tomorrow. Tell them to go after God, who piles on all the riches we could ever manage—to do good, to be rich in helping others, to be extravagantly generous. If they do that, they’ll build a treasury that will last, gaining life that is truly life.
1 Timothy 6:17-19

Day’s Verse:
He’ll [Jesus] be like white-hot fire from the smelter’s furnace. He’ll be like the strongest lye soap at the laundry. He’ll take his place as a refiner of silver, as a cleanser of dirty clothes.
