Ian and I are dog-sitting for my parents this week while they’re in Cannon Beach. This is our barter system: We do laundry at their house; we watch the dog for free when they go on trips. Here are a couple pictures showing how agitated Carmel gets when Dad isn’t around.

OK, I will add that all 5 of the remaining students came, and I got the sense that we did a good job engaging them and getting them to think about bicycling and bicycle safety in a new light.

Day 1 went well, all things considered. We got into the building, had all the materials we needed, everybody showed up, and nobody fell asleep. We survived.

My entire week — and a good portion of earlier weeks — has been consumed with organizing the Bicycle Alliance’s first Traffic Skills 101 class. Originally I conceived it as a way to say thank you to volunteers — essentially another incentive for volunteering. We can say “Another advantage of volunteering for the Bike Alliance is that we offer Traffic Skills 101 exclusively to volunteers for only $20 (to cover the cost of materials). If you took this class elsewhere in the Puget Sound area, you’d pay $60 to $85.”

Today I had the distinct honor of going into the Seattle Tennis Club, “an exclusive, multi-faceted family club which proudly offers its membership an array of athletic, dining and social opportunities.” I’m sure my net worth is far too low to qualify me for membership; besides, to become a member, you have to be recommended by a member of two years’ standing. It was quite the place.

What do I do when things at work are blah?
PLAY WITH DATA, OF COURSE!
I have this handy-dandy GPS device that records data on every bike ride that I remember to turn it on for. That means that when I say to myself, “It feels like I’m not getting any faster on my commutes home from January to now,” I don’t have to go based on gut feeling. I actually have a way of determining whether that is accurate or not. Enter lots of data mining over the course of a few days, some fiddling around with the Excel 2007, and voila! (Note: I have hidden most of this post under the fold, as it’s long, math-and-science heavy, and probably not of interest to most of you.)

I’m in the midst of writing a mathalicious blog about bicycling statistics that I’m sure will enthrall y’all.
