Rain Garden Work Party 3: DONE

Day’s Verse:
Here is a simple, rule-of-thumb guide for behavior: Ask yourself what you want people to do for you, then grab the initiative and do it for them.
Matthew 7:12

DONE

DONE 2

May my back one day learn to forgive me. Yet another Saturday sacrificed to the yard, and it was sunny and 60°, too, perfect for riding — and for moving dirt. Ah well, what’s yet another Saturday off the bike? (Excuse my bitterness; any ride tomorrow looks rainy. I missed my chance.)

A million thanks to Jane, who came back again and who made finishing today possible. And kudos to Ian, who has worked like a slave on a project I dreamed up and he wasn’t so sure about. Continue Reading >>

Fortunately/Unfortunately

Day’s Verse:
Don’t hoard treasure down here where it gets eaten by moths and corroded by rust or—worse!—stolen by burglars. Stockpile treasure in heaven, where it’s safe from moth and rust and burglars. It’s obvious, isn’t it? The place where your treasure is, is the place you will most want to be, and end up being.
Matthew 6:19-21
[Note: This was also yesterday’s verse, but it seemed incredibly appropriate for today, given my Garmin’s death]

When I was a kid, we had a book called Fortunately, by Remy Charlip. In it, the protagonist experiences a series of events, each starting with fortunately or unfortunately. It started with, “Fortunately, he was invited to a surprise party.” On the next page it said something like, “Unfortunately, on the way there, he tripped and fell into a hole.” The entire story went from there. I liked it. Continue Reading >>

OK, folks, I’ve created a special simple Tumblr blog exclusively for Other Katie emails, and I’ve added three new Other Katie emails that I received in the last few days. You can find it at otherkatie.tumblr.com. It’s intended to be totally bare-bones, and I still need to find a way to integrate it into this blog, but it’s out there now. I’ll just be updating it as I receive Other Katie emails, and I may mention it on this blog occasionally, but the Other Katie email documentation is going to become much sparser here from now on. The Symptoms Indicate…

Day’s Verse:
“In a word, what I’m saying is, Grow up. You’re kingdom subjects. Now live like it. Live out your God-created identity. Live generously and graciously toward others, the way God lives toward you.”
Matthew 5:48

There’s a line in this song that I keep thinking of: “Feeling a change in the air.” Yep.

Even when it’s sunny, the air has a crispness and the light has this golden quality to it that reminds us it’s fall. The Seattle Times had an interesting and beautiful discussion of the special autumnal light. Makes me think I need to get out with my camera some more before the season is over. Continue Reading >>

Rain Garden Work Party 2

Day’s Verse:
By the seventh day
God had finished his work.
On the seventh day
he rested from all his work.

Genesis 2:2-ish

Calling this a “work party” is too grand, really, as the group comprised entirely family and Karissa… and the excavator, of course. Most of the time it was just three or four of us working our tails off.

Here’s a summary picture.
Rain Garden Couple
(I know, I’m missing a rake, but we were tired enough that thinking to do this at all seemed pretty clever.) Continue Reading >>
