It’s a Velociraptor!

Day’s Verse:
Dear friend, pay close attention to this, my wisdom; listen very closely to the way I see it.
Then you’ll acquire a taste for good sense;
what I tell you will keep you out of trouble.

Proverbs 5:1-2

We had our 20-week ultrasound today. Ian got to see the little person for the first time, and the baby obliged by doing babyish things like sucking a thumb, opening and closing its mouth, and generally wiggling around a fair bit (which I could already have told you about, since I’ve been feeling that for the last week or more). The ultrasound gal said the baby was being coy and not letting us easily tell if it was a boy or girl, which is what we really wanted to know. Continue Reading >>

“Weird.”

Day’s Verse:
The ways of right-living people glow with light;
the longer they live, the brighter they shine.

Proverbs 4:18

OK, now back to our regularly-scheduled blog post about pregnancy. (By the way, so far it seems the email unsubscribe has worked — no more sexy women contacting me for hookups, thank goodness.)

Earlier this week, a guy friend commented, “I wonder what it’d be like to be pregnant. Like having a water balloon inside.” My response: “It’s weird.” That’s when I realized that I regularly think to myself “how weird” when dealing with a variety of pregnancy-related symptoms. Continue Reading >>

Other Katie Tries to Get Laid

Day’s Verse:
Her whole way of life is doomed;
every step she takes brings her closer to hell.
No one who joins her company ever comes back,
ever sets foot on the path to real living.

Proverbs 2:18-19

I was going to write a post about being pregnant, but I’ve had an Other Katie experience that is infinitely more interesting. I’m still kind of boggling at it, actually.

Yesterday evening, I received the following email:

Remember When…

Day’s Verse:
So now you can pick out what’s true and fair,
find all the good trails!
Lady Wisdom will be your close friend,
and Brother Knowledge your pleasant companion.

Proverbs 2:9-10

Mom has apparently felt an urge to purge old files she doesn’t need anymore, an understandable desire. Among those files she found the folder of all the report cards from my entire school career. The high school ones were boring, but going back to early elementary school — what a trip. Continue Reading >>

Bikes and Peeps

Day’s Verse:
Pay close attention, friend, to what your father tells you;
never forget what you learned at your mother’s knee.

Proverbs 1:8

Here’s how I spent Sunday*:

I went for a really nice 65-mile bike ride midmorning through midafternoon. Here’s the route.

The guy I rode with is a Cat 4 racer, and could pretty easily have left me far behind — and did on all the hills, which is where I’ve had the most dramatic decrease in riding fitness — but mostly kept it to a “mellow” pace (for him) that I could maintain well enough. It was a gorgeous day for a ride, the first day since last summer I got out when it was sunny and above 50°, and the route and company were exactly what I was looking for. I got home feeling exhilarated. I haven’t gotten in a good long ride in quite a while, and this ride scratched that itch perfectly. It reminded me why I like riding, something I was starting to lose sight of through all the rainy, windy days of riding solo very, very slowly. Continue Reading >>

New Roof, Last Training

Day’s Verse:
People brought anybody with an ailment, whether mental, emotional, or physical. Jesus healed them, one and all.
Matthew 4:24-ish

Today the Cornerstone Roofing guys come and replace our roof. Also today I leave for my last scheduled Bicycle Alliance training, in Port Angeles. Last night I slept terribly, dreaming about the roof going wrong, waking up anxious, and then thinking it was time to get up to finish packing for the training.

I’m excited to get the roof dealt with, but last week we had an interesting development that hopefully won’t spell trouble for the future. Continue Reading >>

Truth.

Day’s Verse:
So clean house! Make a clean sweep of malice and pretense, envy and hurtful talk. You’ve had a taste of God. Now, like infants at the breast, drink deep of God’s pure kindness. Then you’ll grow up mature and whole in God.
1 Peter 2:1-3

Ian and I like to listen to This American Life together sometimes. It gives us something outside of our normal experience to talk about. Usually we stream an old episode, often one Ian heard while I was off biking and thought would interest me. A couple weeks ago we did that for This American Life’s most popular broadcast ever, Mr. Daisey and the Apple Factory. Continue Reading >>
