Day’s Verse:

Blessed are you when men hate you, and ostracize you, and insult you, and scorn your name as evil, for the sake of the Son of Man.

Luke 6:22

Yesterday in the Campus Center Lesley and I saw our IQP advisor. He looked odd not sitting there in his little office with small plastic firemen climbing all over a small plastic firetruck behind him. He and Lesley had already been chatting when I arrived, so that when he turned to me and said, “It sounds like you’re almost finished,” I looked at Lesley rather alarmedly. Finished with our IQP? Hardly. Maybe 60 – 75% done with the draft, but that is a draft the first one. But when Erwin heard “65 pages” drop from Lesley’s luscious lips, I think his brain processed it into “Too much reading,” causing a verdict of “Stop right there, you’re done” to pop out. Still, the reassurance of knowing that we cannot go wrong with Erwin at this point – he proclaimed us his “easiest group ever,” which may not be saying much as we suspect he has only advised one other group that was really terrible – as long as we finish this draft and revise it well. Also it turns out that Lesley’s boyfriend’s IQP was only 25 pages, which may be part of the miscommunication Lesley and I were having about length and extent of details necessary. Ian’s was 120 with numerous appendices. Thus I was thinking we would be sitting pretty at 75 or 80 pages.

Last night we also went to a debate on gay marriage. I have neither the desire nor inclination to recap it because it ranged from ad hominem arguments to religion-bashing to the Iraq war to slavery. The upshot remains that some people thing it would be a boon while others think it a bane, and neither group will ever agree or resolve their differences by debate. When it comes to moral issues, few people will listen to logically constructed arguments and revise their beliefs.

  1. Some people say there is project guidelines, others not so much. My CS MQP is looking to be about 25 pages, about the same as my SUF, so there you go. There was once a 5 page math MQP, but these five pages were not of this earth.
