A Quiet Memory Place

~~~
Day’s Verse:
I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.
Philippians 4:12-13
A long time ago there was a quiet pool rippling with the kiss of fish to the surface. Rolling green hills ringed the water as their elder brothers loomed purple-and-white in the distance. Breezes off the snow came down to ruffle hair and new leaves alike. Listening carefully, the whisper of those leaves rubbing together sounded like the shift of shadows and light with which their movement speckled the grass. Louder and nearer the sounded the golden dog’s panting as fingers twined through long fur and through long grass. Cool green tickled bare legs but golden and clear flowed sun rays through the empty sky, a perfect moment. An impossible moment. Continue Reading >>
Hold the Line
Day’s Verse:
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.
Romans 1:16
I think one of the hardest things about being a student is remaining consistently motivated to responsibly follow through on the work professors assigned. Unlike many working people who have the opportunity to leave work behind in the evenings or on weekends (though that isn’t universally true), a responsible student’s free time is limited to breaks in work, the few preciously rare moments in which no work demands doing, or when the student’s brain is fried. Risky Racing: No Easy Solution
~~~
Day’s Verse:
Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you are a listener when your are anything but, letting the Word go in one ear and out the other. Act on what you hear!
James 1:22
~~~
In her book Ethics in Engineering Practice and Research, Caroline Whitbeck proposes a hypothetical moral dilemma she calls “Risky Racing” in which a solar race-car team finds that its vehicle flips over when taking turns at moderate speeds. The team is loath to scrap its efforts, however, as it has $40,000 of their sponsors’ money on the project and have already bought the tickets to the Australian race. Their conundrum is based partly on the fact that they sold the idea to sponsors based on the car’s light design, and partly within the fact that the race occurs once every three years, making the current opportunity the only opportunity for many of the designers. This paper will identify the specific ethical issues and conflicts of interests in the case, discuss what outcomes are at stake, and explain my suggested solutions for this situation. Housing Woes
Day’s Verse:
“Therefore, keep your courage, men, for I believe God that it will turn out exactly as I have been told.”
Acts 27:25
~~~

I have lately become concerned about finding a place to live next year. Ian and I can’t very easily afford to stay here, where the rent is sure to hit $1,100 a month plus all utilities, by ourselves. We’ve started looking at places and are expecting a call today about seeing two apartments which, unfortunately, are avaliable now and so won’t really be viable for us. Sunday we’re also looking at a place that sounds pretty good, but Thursday we went to one that had been advertised as great but turned out just OK. He’d claimed there was a dishwasher, washer, and dryer in the apartment, and there just plain weren’t. Plus there was very little (no) storage space, and Ian and I are obliged to keep a large number of specialized boxes in which to pack our more delicate things. Continue Reading >>

Newton and His Laws!

~~~
Day’s Verse:
Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all the unfortunate. Open your mouth, judge righteously, and defend the rights of the afflicted and needy.
Proverbs 31:8-9
~~~

For the last twelve hours or more I’ve had one phrase of a song ringing through my head, courtesy of my my mother’s assiduous listening to the Physics Songbag in the van on the way to school during my childhood:

You won’t get my attention, you won’t get my applause/

’Til you learn a little something about Newton and his laws./

No matter what you say or do, you won’t get through to me/

Until you learn about old Newton’s one-two-three.
