Recipe in a Bottle

Day’s Verse:
The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold.
Psalm 46:11

You know how every middle-aged couple has horror stories of recipes-gone-wrong from their early marriage? This morning marks one recipe that will live in infamy in our marriage…

*Wavy transition to flashback*

It all started when I felt like something interesting for breakfast. Saturday mornings we have plenty of time and I enjoy baking a more elaborate breakfast than the usual weekday fare. This particular morning I didn’t have any particular breakfast in mind, so I consulted my co-muncher. He suggested pancakes, a perennial favorite that I’ve made since I was tall enough see the top of the stove. The kitchen inventory proved sorrowfully lacking in the primary ingredient, Bisquick, but as a resourceful pancake-maker I harnessed the power of the internet to procure a from-scratch pancake recipe. Guilty as Charged

Day’s Verse:
Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises. For God is the King of all the earth; sing praises with a skillful psalm.
Psalm 47:6-7

Have you ever had a time when you opened your mouth and something mean just came out? Yesterday I got miffed at our roommate when I walked in the door and he immediately shouted my name. I told him to “shut up and leave me alone,” which later struck me as odd because honestly I had no intention of saying anything like that. What’s in your heart comes out your mouth, indeed. Guilt arrived after a while and I wondered why I had even said that. I do not like being accosted the instant I walk in the door, and our roommate has a propensity to do just that in his (often over) exuberant manner of greeting. Even so I confess I did not anticipate reacting so strongly to such a small annoyance. Continue Reading >>

Purely Business

Day’s Verse:
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change and though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea.
Psalm 46:1-2

Here is a link to four visual designs my group created for class. You tell me, based on only those four pictures: what goal does this public awareness campaign hope to achieve?

Day’s Verse:
In place of your fathers will be your sons; You shall make them princes in all the earth. I will cause Your name to be remembered in all generations; therefore the peoples will give You thanks forever and ever.
Psalm 45:16-17

It seems that analogcafe.net was recently hacked and taken over to install some ne’er-do-well computer infection. My deepest apologies if it caused anybody trouble; I have zero control over analogcafe.net and could do nothing about it.

Today has felt long enough to span an entire weekend. On the other hand, that also means I’ve gotten a weekend’s-worth of work done, or almost. The most fun work came when my group for Visual Design got together and started creating fun ads to raise awareness of how cool it is to be TC. We took pictures of ourselves in fun, TC-promoting situations and intend to keep working on making them appealing. These will be no-copy (wordless) advertisements that turn all those ECE, ME, CS, MA, and BB majors green with envy at what fun stuff we do. It’s also great practice for me for my MQP as well. Day’s Verse:
In God we have boasted all day long, and we will give thanks to Your name forever.
Psalm 44:8

Today one of my friends appeared in class dressed nicely, from penny-loafers up to a sweater and collared shirt. Our interaction:

Me: Man, you look nice today. What’s the occasion?
Him: It’s laundry day and all my T-shirts are dirty, so I had to wear church clothes.

Not quite the response I expected. Also, unexpectedly, I found an echinoderm in my camera bag and one of my ILL books came in at the library. It’s mostly pictures, and counts as research for my MQP. It’s great to be TC. Continue Reading >>

WPI Health Communications: What Caused the 60 Illnesses?

Day’s Verse:
O send out Your light and Your truth, let them lead me; let them bring me to Your holy hill and to Your dwelling places.
Psalm 43:3
~~~
A-term I took a class called Writing about Disease and Public health. Now, D-term, WPI has had a serious health scare: sixty-odd students have experienced serious food-poisoning from eating at the on-campus food service. Right at our doorstep, the perfect opportunity to show what effective communicatin can do! Unfortunately, that has not yet happened, and one woman – Janet Begin Richardson – has had the difficult job for the last week of telling the student body that nobody knows anything. For posterity, I preserve her emails here: Continue Reading >>
Day’s Verse:
The Lord will command His lovingkindness in the daytime; and His song will be with me in the night, a prayer to the God of my life.
This is my father-in-law, Gary. He came for Ian’s presentation and I took this picture of him.
I was just sitting here writing WA #4 for my Visual Design class when I wondered:
What do you get passionate about?
The phrase “get passionate” reeks of Christian revivals at summer camp, but it needn’t remain only in those loud, sweaty, earnest circus tents. Life without passion for something becomes little more than a mechanical exercise in metabolism, so I asked myself what I feel passionate about. My list came out thus: Continue Reading >>
