I have the option to have my diploma read:
Technical, Scientific and Professional Communication or
Professional Writing.
Which would you suggest I pick, and why?
This sort of thing makes me wonder if anybody will ever care what degree I have on my diploma, or if this semantics difference will sway anybody at all.
The snowstorm’s effects have totally worn off. We still have piles of snow, but large patches of grass are also peeking through. My workload, however, is a heavier pile of snow than any that fell on Worcester; and for all that, I seem incapable of buckling down to really exercise the strength of will to do what needs doing. So excuse me while I go tackle my ECE lab, or perhaps study for my ECE exam or maybe my Cell Bio exam, both on Friday. Or maybe I’ll go do my Cell Bio paper, or start my English paper or rewrite an article for my ECE job, or even do some design work on my Professional Writing job. Alternatively, I could read some Cell Bio or ECE, or even start on The Physicists for English.
The best news, however: No class tomorrow, thanks to Academic Advising day! Too bad I have four meetings that day at 9:00, 10:15, 12:00 and 1:00. I’m sure I’ll get lots of stuff done in the half-hour gaps I can grasp. Mmmm-hmmm.
The first one. “Professional Writting” is a degree you can get at a community college. The first one sounds like you actually put all that time into it. Plus it’ll give the person reading it more to do… I hear they like that.
I think the longer one is better because it encompasses a vast array of disciplines. The word ‘communication’ could mean anything from writing to web design and graphic art. I think it offers more options for a diverse range of job applications. Professional writing narrows it down solely to writing.
But, of course it’s up to you!
Yay graduation in 100 days. I don’t think I’m going to hit up the ‘times tonight, though. I feel like I don’t even know anyone in our class except a handful of people.
Definitely the first one. The second one doesn’t even specify that you’re a technical writer; you could be a professional novelist just as easily.
After asking my Wednesday night Bible Study group and getting my mom’s advice, and taking your comments into consideration, I’ve decided to go with the long one. It covers more ground and sounds more technical — gets at the fact I’ve done all these durn technical classes, and I don’t want to hide ’em under a bushel!
No option for “Technical, Scientific and Professional Writing” ? At least at my college, Communication was a fluff major. So I think Writing sounds more hardcore; but maybe any degree coming from your school is hardcore anyway.
I’d have to agree with Lisa M.: You have 3 very specific titles, and then the very ambiguous “Communications”. And any degree from our school _is_ hardcore.
Unfortunately, it’s an either/or situation. I can’t change the name of the major to suit my whims by mixing and matching between the two.
