Friday: Yantra Interview

You are taking a moving escalator in the Bangalore airport. You go down the 26 steps in 30 seconds the first time. Then you go down again, this time with 34 steps in 18 seconds. How many steps are there total?

You have only two ropes and a lighter. The ropes burn at random rates, but each takes exactly one hour to burn completely. For example, the first quarter of a rope might burn in 3 minutes, half the rope in 15 minutes, and the last quarter in 42 minutes. How can you use these tools to calculate exactly 45 minutes?

…whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed; for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. (Romans 3:25-26)

He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (2 Cor 5:21)

Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of me this night, for it is written, ‘I will strike down the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered.’ But after I have been raised, I will go ahead of you to Galilee.” But Peter said to Him, “Even though all may fall away because of you, I will never fall away.” (Matthew 26: 31-32)

An important topic in surveying is the standardization of equipment, or the comparison of the equipment (whether it is a tape, an electronic distance-measuring instrument, or whatever) against a standard. In other words, has the equipment been damaged or shaken out of adjustment, have repairs or weather changes affected it, and so on? (Jack McCormac, Surveying, pg. 66)

Sunday: CBF Spring Retreat

If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. (Romans 10:9)

Ecological awareness, in that deep sense, recognizes the fundamental interdependence of all phenomena and the embeddedness of individuals and societies int eh cyclical processes of nature. …[I]t becomes clear that ecological awareness is spiritual in its deepest essence. (Fritjof Capra,“Physics and the Current Change of Paradigms” in Ecology: Key Concepts in Critical Theory)

Magicians, whether modern entertainers or indigenous, tribal sorcerers, have in common the fact that they work with the malleable texture of perception. (Abram)

[Looking at a bison] When it snorted, I snorted back; when it shifted its shoulders, I shifted my stance; when I tossed my head, it tossed its own in reply. I found myself caught in a nonverbal conversation with this Other, a gestural duet with which my reflective awareness had very little to do. It was as if my body were suddenly being motivated by wisdom older than my thinking mind… (David Abram, “The Ecology of Magic” in This Sacred Earth, pgs. 477 and 488)

Oh, damn the man, I grumbled. Why couldn’t he just be manipulated by pretty words the way other husbands were? (Laurie R. King, A Letter of Mary, pg. 296)

Tapemen should develop the habit of estimating by eye the distances they are measuring because it will enable them to avoid most major blunders. (McCormac, 79)

The fundamentalist goes too far, in my opinion, by regarding Scripture as a sort of encyclopedia of inspired information on virtually every topic. However, despite the Scriptures’ distinctly religious focus, they do occasionally speak on issues that can bear even on natural sciences—as when they teach that the universe is not eternal, or speak of laws, space, and time as created by God. An audio quote: “I am not altogether on anybody’s side because nobody is altogether on my side.” (J.R.R Tolkien, The Two Towers) Bonus points for the first person to tell me which character says this quote.

  1. Rope puzzle: light both ends of the first rope and 1 end of the second rope. When the first rope has completely burned, light the other end of the second rope. When it is done burning, it has been 45 mins.

  2. I guess you have aptitude (unless you looked that up online). I just made something totally different.

What about the escalator one, Einstein?

    Oh, and: Yeah, obviously. 🙂
