Day’?s Verse:
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.”
Jeremiah 29:11-12

Today we celebrate the fact that I have lived 23 years. Mom sent me an email about this event:

Katie:
I clearly remember what I was doing 23 years ago at this time… may your birthday be full of joy and laughter.
Love,
Mom

I imagine you would remember having your first child. Or any child. To celebrate, I rode my bike to work… oh, wait, I do that every day. Never mind; let me try again.

To celebrate, my boss brought in bagels and cream cheese for everybody. Yay! Then I received an email from another part of the reporting group, saying that since three reporting group people had their birthdays this week, we would have a party at 11:30. Cake! I ate a piece of chocolate and took a piece of carrot to go. Then, not an hour later, I received a phone call from the receptionist: “You have something down here.” Edible Arrangements! After cake and 1.5 bagels, I could hardly imagine eating more, but since Mom and Dad had arranged for this lovely surprise, how could I refuse? I ate an enormous chocolate-covered strawberry, a chocolate-covered slice of apple, and a chocolate-covered slice of orange, then shared the rest among my coworkers (one of whom proclaimed me her best friend forever for providing chocolate at the exact right moment). Best of all, I got a balloon — and I haven’t had a balloon in ages. I love balloons.

UPDATE [24 May 07]: The rest of the day went well, too. A nice strong tailwind pushed me most of the way home, so although the train came in late I arrived home at the usual time, riding my normal route in 21 minutes. Not half an hour after I got home, Mom and Colleen called and sang me happy birthday, and (after a brief interlude in which I scrubbed out the bath tub real quick and took a shower to rinse it out) Ian made us taco salad. I made guacamole for the first time, and it was great! –As was the salad, which we enthusiastically enjoyed. We made no cake, however; having partaken so deeply of the taco salad, we went to bed still comfortably full.

For my birthday Ian gave me gift certificates for energy-efficient lightbulbs for the whole apartment — a delightfully thoughtful gift. He also bought me new bicycling gloves. Mom and Dad gave me a new waterproof bicycling jacket (modeled in the pictures I posted last week), which I love. All in all, I had a very nice day.

  1. Happy Birthday Katie. I have my 23rd birthday on the 23rd too, of next month. I don’t think I’m going to enjoy turning 23. Until now, I’ve just been “entering my 20’s”. Now I will be in my 20’s in earnest. I don’t like for time to pass!
