Droopy (Training Ride No. 6)

Day’?s Verse:
Do you not know?
Have you not heard?
The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.

Isaiah 40:28

After riding 88 miles on Davey this weekend, my legs are totally pooped — and, for the first time in a long time, they’re sore, too. I had an OK ride; joined up with a Team in Training group for a little while around Boxboro. Those five people comprised only 1/5 of the total cyclists I saw out today: Yesterday I saw 2 other people on bikes. Today I saw 23. It helped that today the wind calmed down and the temperature, although nowhere near balmy, nudged into the low 40s. Continue Reading >>

Pothole and Snow Plow Season (Training Ride No. 5)

Day’?s Verse:
The tempest comes out from its chamber, the cold from the driving winds.
The breath of God produces ice, and the broad waters become frozen.

Job 37:9-10

Although few things flourish during the frigid winter months, this year we did have one bumper crop: Potholes. The weather — a mix of sub-freezing days interspersed with the occasional 35-degree rainy day — proved perfect for growing large, juicy potholes that spawned plenty of seeds for next year’?s crop, too. The freeze/thaw cycle from November through March has provided excellent fodder for the potholes, of which several varieties are available. By the end of March or beginning of April, many of the largest potholes have already been harvested (filled in), leaving only the less egregious ones for the warmer months. A savvy connoisseur of potholes will search out the finest crop during late February, before road crews begin the harvest, although it is always wise to keep a weather eye out for a well-developing pothole. Davey with White Bar Tape
White bar tape and waxed gleaming paintwork is the only clearly visible sign of the $400 cleanup and repair Davey received. Maybe the weather will cooperate so I can ride him from now on. Oh boy, oh boy!

A New Report Type and Training Ride No. 4

~~~
Day’?s Verse:
And there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.
Revelation 12:7-9
At work I have started learning how to write a new type of report. It is both confusing and remarkably straightforward, which means that I understand some parts of it easily, while other parts totally flummox me. I have somewhat successfully written two fairly standard reports, and this week started on a third. One familiar part of these reports is how you start: With the protocol. The protocol is the Bible for a study, laying out everything that will happen from the start of dosing to signing the final report, and it always has lots of important stuff in it that pertains to our reports. Training Ride No. 3
Day’?s Verse:
So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.
Hebrews 10:35-36
Today:
The major advantage of riding from church home is that Holden happens to sit at about 800 feet above sea level, while Marlborough weighs in at around 400 feet above sea level. This means that any route I take, although it may have some climbing involved, will always trend downwards. I also hopped on the Assabet River Rail Trail for the last section of my ride, which turned it into a truly delightful meander along smooth, lightly-peopled, car-free countryside. Even so, after Saturday’s ride, my legs felt leaden almost this entire ride. I forced myself to keep going anyway, and eventually I just felt a normal amount of tired. Clearly I have a significant amount of training to do before I can ride 75 miles two days in a row, let alone 100 miles two days in a row. Continue Reading >>
Training Ride No. 2
~~~
Day’s Verse:
My response is to get down on my knees before the Father, this magnificent Father who parcels out all heaven and earth. I ask him to strengthen you by his Spirit—not a brute strength but a glorious inner strength—that Christ will live in you as you open the door and invite him in. And I ask him that with both feet planted firmly on love, you’ll be able to take in with all followers of Jesus the extravagant dimensions of Christ’s love. Reach out and experience the breadth! Test its length! Plumb the depths! Rise to the heights! Live full lives, full in the fullness of God.
Ephesians 3:14-19

A Meh Kind of Week

~~~
Day’?s Verse:
From noon to three, the whole earth was dark. Around mid-afternoon Jesus groaned out of the depths, crying loudly, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”
Some bystanders who heard him said, “He’s calling for Elijah.” One of them ran and got a sponge soaked in sour wine and lifted it on a stick so he could drink. The others joked, “Don’t be in such a hurry. Let’s see if Elijah comes and saves him.” Continue Reading >>
