Day’s Verse:
Hear me, O God, as I voice my complaint;
protect my life from the threat of the enemy.

Psalm 64:1

A local radio station plays only Christmas music from the day after Thanksgiving through Christmas Day. I’m sure when they started this, it sounded like a good idea. But as a listener subjected against her will to at least 8 hours a day of solid Christmas pop tunes, let me say: It is not a good idea. I cannot emphasize enough what a bad idea this is. Who wants to hear “Feliz Navidad,” “Little Drummer Boy,” “Silver Bells,” “Jingle Bells,” “Christmas Shoes,” “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire,” or any number of other Christmas classics day in and day out? After the 50,000th repetition, instead of feeling Christmas cheer, I feel Christmas fury. It is not the happiest time of year, with this Christmas music torture. This soul-deep revulsion fills me when I hear the tinkle of little bells. I have to forcibly restrain myself from smashing the offending radio (in the cube across the way) at the opening notes of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” Last week I had the following (abridged) conversation with the coworker playing the music:

Me: How is this even a Christmas song?
Coworker: What? Oh, I don’t even hear it. I just have it on for the background noise.
Me: (&(*(*(*&%$^^^#*_&%#%&*(*&*)_^%%%$^!!!

  1. Here’s a twist on the music of the season: I was sitting in Noppakao restaurant today listening to the piped in music which consisted of a Beatles album with Spanish lyrics. Just plain odd, if you ask me! 😉

  2. Not many college friends know this but I made a Christmas Shoes music video last year. And I’m plugging it.

    If you find it too painful to listen to at least consider that at the end their are scenes of when the kid returns the shoes to the store to help pay for his moms funeral.

    Also Katie, it sounds like you have terrible people that you work with. Seriously. Not just ‘terrible co-workers’, it sound like they suck at just being people.

  3. I agree with Darren re: the people suckiness. Eep!

    I voluntarily listen to this stuff in the car, but I don’t think I could take it for 8 hours a day. And I only like the classic ones anyway. Every time I hear the Whitney Houston ‘Do You Hear What I Hear?’ rendition I change the channel immediately.

  4. Katie, I feel your pain. One little Christmas song and I’m on the verge of violence. However, there is one Christmas song that I love, charish, and crank every time I hear it in the car – Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You.” I can’t help it, I love that song.
