This picture was experimental in a couple ways: One, I used a slower shutter speed to get the flowing water in the background; two, I used a flash to illuminate our faces, since we had the sun behind us. I’m very pleased with how it turned out. Also it took a lot of patience to wait at the Grist Mill for everybody else to clear out so we could be alone in our picture!
This is a lovely photo. Thanks for waiting patiently so you could share it with all of us. What do you mean, no fanfare for your birthday? A parade, complete with bagpipes, sounds like a fanfare to me!

I hadn’t noticed the fill flash originally but now that you mention it I think it improved the shot quite a bit. I guess that’s the point – it is supposed to look natural. The slow shutter speed also did a good job of capturing the waterfall. Slower still would have given the water a more ephemeral look but you have to balance that against the desire to keep the people in focus. All in all, I think it turned out pretty good. A strong candidate for our 2009 family collage…
